At 12:05:30 p.m. IST on Saturday, July 18, 2026, a rocket built by a nine-year-old Hyderabad startup lifted off from ISRO's First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Roughly fifteen minutes later, having reached a velocity of approximately eight kilometres per second, Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 settled into a 450-kilometre low-Earth orbit. India had just become only the third country in the world, after the United States and China, where a private company — not a government space agency — has independently placed payloads into orbit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the achievement one that would "encourage countless youngsters to dream bigger and innovate fearlessly."

"Aagaman" is Sanskrit for "the arrival." The name was chosen deliberately — this was a fully instrumented validation of an orbital-class vehicle designed and built in India, by Indian engineers, from a standing start in 2018. Skyroot's own post-launch statement was characteristically direct: "Hello space, we have arrived!"

Total funding raised across roughly a dozen rounds sits at approximately $150–160 million, from 33 investors including GIC, Temasek, Sherpalo Ventures, BlackRock, Solar Industries India, and the family offices of the Shanghvi and Greenko Group founders. One honest caveat worth noting alongside the headline valuation: per CB Insights, Skyroot remained pre-revenue as of the end of FY25 (March 2025) — the $1.1 billion figure reflects investor conviction in the technology and roadmap, not yet commercial revenue.
